Building History

Building & Skyline Neighborhood

Skyline Elementary School is located in a quiet, northwest sector of Tacoma, close to Highway 16 and the Narrows Bridge. The Skyline attendance area is bordered by Sixth Avenue on the south, Pearl Street on the east, the Narrows on the west and Narrows Drive on the north. Skyline Elementary was built in 1962 immediately next to the Truman Junior High School campus.   Truman and Skyline remained connected until 1999 when Truman moved to its current location on North 35th & Pearl.  The old Truman school building is now called the Professional Development Center and is a training center for Tacoma Public School employees.  Skyline’s campus-style architecture is entirely wheelchair accessible and houses 27 classrooms.  In addition there are areas for speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Grade levels include Kindergarten through grade 5 as well as three Special Ed. classrooms:  Preschool, Multi-Ortho, and Developmental.
